| Computer animation allows us to visualize the Aikido techniques
recorded through motion capture in flexible ways.
The first step is to model virtual human figures. Although complex figures seem more lifelike, simpler figures introduce less interpretation and make the dynamics of the motion more apparent. The figures are attached to animation skeletons to make them move. We've explored a variety of ways to visualize the techniques. One is to create trails from points on the body like the wrist or pelvis, highlighting patterns in the movement. Another is to color body parts based on their speed. We show some techniques from below where the footwork is more visible, and in others we show only the attacker or defender. And we've found a number of other interesting ways to look at Aikido through the computer. The intention is not to reveal the "secrets" of Aikido but to create new perspectives on the art in the same way that photography and videography have done. |
